What
We Believe
|
We are a confessional Lutheran Church:
- founded on God's Word as clearly revealed in the
Bible
"First , then, we receive and embrace with our whole heart the
Prophetic and Apostolic Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the
pure, clear fountain of Israel, which is the only true standard by which
all teachers and doctrines are to be judged." - Formula of Concord,
Solid Declaration, Rule and Norm, 1.
- continuing in the tradition of the Apostolic church,
whose traditions were returned to during the period of the Reformation
"And since of old the true Christian doctrine, in a pure, sound
sense, was collected from God's Word into brief articles or chapters
against the corruption of heretics, we confess, in the second place, the
three Ecumenical Creeds, namely, the Apostles', the Nicene, and the
Athanasian, as glorious confessions of the faith, brief, devout, and
founded upon God's Word, in which all the heresies which at that time
had arisen in the Christian Church are clearly and unanswerably
refuted." - Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, Rule and Norm, 2.
- saved by
"Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Word Alone"
- that is, we believe that we are saved solely on the
basis of God's Grace, by faith in the atoning
sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that faith is imparted to us by
the Holy Spirit through the working of God's Word.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is
not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so
that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk
in them." - Ephesians. 2:8-10 (ESV)
'But how are they to call on him in whom they have not
believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never
heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are
they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful
are the feet of those who preach the good news!" But they have not
all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he
has heard from us?" So faith comes from hearing, and hearing
through the word of Christ.' - Romans 10:14-17 (ESV)
Our Statement of Belief - The Lutheran Confessions
The Lutheran Church—Canada accepts the Scriptures as the inspired and
inerrant Word of God, and subscribes unconditionally to all the symbolical
books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church as a true and unadulterated
statement and exposition of the Word of God. We accept the Confessions
because they are drawn from the Word of God and on that account regard
their doctrinal content as a true and binding exposition of Holy Scripture
and as authoritative for all pastors, congregations and other rostered
church workers of The Lutheran Church—Canada.
